It used to be that building cabinets was a job for an expert. If you announced to friends or loved ones that you were going to build your own kitchen cabinets, they would look at you kind of funny. The same could be said for building entertainment centers, desk units, storage units, or any other cabinetry units. The common assumption for building any of these items use to be that you needed a lot of specialized tools and a lot of experience.
But what if there was a new product that took a lot of the guess work out of it? What if you found out that you only needed to make either a rip cut or a cross cut on your table saw? Most novice woodworker's can do that. Even if you do not have a table saw you could have those cuts made where you buy your sheet stock (Home Depot for example). This change in opportunity opens the doors to mass encouragement. The best part about woodworking is making something that looks good but is immensely practical for your home. So what is it?
Corner posts
These corner posts are solid hardwood that is shaped on a shaper. The bit is a custom
made workhouse that solves the assembly problem. Unfortunately you cannot buy the bit, but the product is available exclusively at Router Table Depot. The whole concept of the post is that the angle calculation is made for you so that you simply can join two peces of wood at the corner for a perfect fit and a custom rounded finish. The hrdwood ensures that it is durable. Plywood can become furniture without having to wrry about treating the edges. You can simply but the wood into the joint and you are done. You can glue it, nail it or screw it from the inside. Pre cut dado' on the ends alow you to add a top and bottom with 3/4" plywood. This makes design a snap. If you are making many units this is a real time saver.
The alternative
Think of your other choices if you want to build some shop cabinets or a TV stand for
example. Learning a new technique on top of making the actual item always takes more
time. At my house, time is money.
Variation #3
There are a couple of projects that you can build in the workshop that are more or less at the top of the food chain. Mortise and tenon joinery, dovetail joinery and raised panels certainly are three of them. Most of the time when you are doing these three types of work you are involved in something that is built around a cabinet. Many cabinet companies thrive on expensive cnc machines and special training to be able to make these cabinets. The work is there because the demand is there. Making the cabinets has always been somewhat of a challenge. Its not that it is hard once you move past the learning curve and the extra equipment that is involved. However there is an easier way.
RTD has come out with a new product that makes making cabinets super easy. It can be used on:
Shop cabinets and stands
Router Tables
Children' furniture
Amoires
Bookcases
Desks
Bench'
Stands
Etertainment centers
Imagine taking a pre fabricated corner post that is rounded and shaped with the correct
angles to accept stock to make the perfect radius corner. A small reveal is built in so that your project has great lines and detail. Now all you have to do is either rip cut or cross cut your sides to size and attach them to the corner posts. A dado on the top and bottom perfectly match stock so you can make beautiful tops and bottoms as well. These make great looking cabinets or other projects and allow you to take the time with the other joinery techniques for all the details. This has turned out
